Benefits to the Arrowhead Non-Progressive Panel System

The Arrowhead system is the only non-progressive dry rainscreen panel system that’s AAMA508 and 509 compliant. This means that any panel can be removed and installed if one gets damaged, without requiring the panels installed prior to it to be removed first.
For many reasons, this new panel system is a lot less expensive to install—especially compared to popular contemporary systems:
- With current systems, every time a single panel is installed, horizontal and vertical extrusions must be installed first. This is not required for the Arrowhead system and this saves labor.
- Because walls aren’t generally straight and panel systems need to be planed to look good, planing is difficult when installing panels and mounting extrusions one at a time with the current systems. The Arrowhead system allows the entire array of base extrusions to be planed at installation and at the same time, without panels being installed. This is much more efficient and saves labor.
- Because there must be a substrate that includes waterproofing or moisture barriers, Arrowhead base extrusions are a means to hold them in place so that wind and weather don’t remove them while waiting for panel installation. This better protects the substrate underneath.
- Installing façade panels is fast and easy because the base extrusions are already on the building.
- Because there is one lightweight installation tool that installers will use to install façade panels with the Arrowhead system, they no longer need to pack heavy drills, batteries, and bits on scaffolding or lifts. This provides some benefit to the safety factor because there are less weight, bulk, and possible distractions during installation.
- Because the panels are installed after base extrusions, they are able to be installed extremely fast. The building façade will change in days instead of weeks.
- Because the base extrusions and panels can be installed separately, clutter on the scaffolding or lifts will be minimized. Current popular systems require more clutter, which equals inefficiency and creates more potential for safety hazards.
This new system is less expensive to fabricate and provides better quality:
- The cost of materials for panel fabrication will be approximately the same.
- There is a platform on the back of the panel return frame extrusions. This platform provides many advantages:
  - It provides a means of attaching the frame extrusions to each other at the corners of the panels. This provides consistently sharp corners without gapping, which is indicative of advanced fabricators. Because a clinching tool can be used, instead of pop riveting, to connect these platforms, fabrication time is saved.
  - It provides a means to attach the stiffener extrusions to the frame extrusions, making the panel strength much stronger while still preventing deflection. Once again, using a clinching tool instead of pop riveting saves on fabrication time.
  - Because the stiffener is clinched to the frame extrusions at each end, structural caulk can be applied between the stiffener and the back of the panel without requiring additional labor.
  - Because the stiffeners can be attached to the frame extrusions, it helps to comply with the strict hurricane requirements for Miami Dade construction, which is used along the Gulf Coast and lower East Coast regions. This means that less fabrication labor is needed to meet this requirement, and that in areas where it’s not required, the panels are simply stronger.
  - Because stiffeners can be attached to the frame extrusions, plate panels can be painted and cured in high temperature ovens. They will then only require minimal labor to structurally caulk after painting. This saves time and money and minimizes the potential for damage to a panel with post-paint stiffener installation.
  - The platform assists the frame extrusion with minimizing its own deflection.
  - The platform provides a surface that can, if required, connect all four sides of a panel via the stiffeners by using clinching tools and a flat bar between the vertical and horizontal stiffeners. This achieves Miami Dade hurricane compliance.
- The frame extrusion has a flat surface that is installed adjacent to the panel returns and it will accept self-piercing rivets to connect the MCM or formed sheet. This saves fabrication labor.
Because architects love to specify MCM, Arrowhead’s lower installed cost makes it more appealing to building owners, which will result in more sales. The lower cost will also make it easier to compete with other rainscreen systems, which makes Arrowhead less likely to be value engineered out.
This system will allow for any thickness of MCM or fabricated sheet panels. This new concept will allow for an array of AAMA508 and 509 compliant rainscreen systems. Plate or sheet panels offer the benefit of using custom colors that are extremely expensive with MCM products.
This system easily provides for optional system depths whereas current systems have only one depth. This is not available with the current popular systems.
One of the biggest complaints and time delays for fabricators and installers is finding field measurements. Because the Arrowhead system’s base extrusions are installed first, measurements can be taken while they are being installed. From these measurements, fabrication of panels can be made with speed and confidence because the guesswork will be eliminated. This is not possible with current popular systems.
The main base or field extrusion’s upwardly tapered horizontal flanges serve several purposes:
- They provide a channel for the T-clips to be installed at predetermined intervals. The T-clips are turned to lock into position in the field extrusion, preventing them from moving or backing out without deliberate attention.
- They provide a centered location for screw installation into the substrate.
- The upward inclined surfaces double as a lock washer for the screws to help ensure that they don’t back out over time.
From time to time, building owners change the appearance of their building—notably automobile sales facilities and high-rise residential buildings.
- Because the base extrusions don’t need to be removed or replaced to replace panels, the cost to install new and/or different MCM or plate panels is dramatically reduced. The reason is that the elevated equipment, replacement materials, and removal/installation labor are significantly reduced. Far greater than a 50% overall savings may be realized during an exterior renovation.
- New panels can be installed as old panels are being removed, helping to reduce exposure to the barriers and substrate.
- These advantages mean that the business’s business will be less effected during the exterior renovation.
In short, this new system is revolutionary in the commercial architectural world. It will be extremely appealing to architects, general contractors, and property owners because of lowered costs, shortened lead times, non-progressive ability, system depth options, strength, and versatility.
Companies using the current popular systems will not be able to compete with the Arrowhead system price or lead times.
Because the Arrowhead system saves so much time, general contractors will receive their draw for this portion of the work faster. The time savings will also reflect well on architects. —djs
